Robin Smith – Appreciation

Robin Smith

Robin is based in South Africa in the area well-known for its battlefield sites dating back to the years between 1899 and 1902. In his retirement, he’s explored various of the sites, documenting the state of their memorials. These, together with an account of what happened to a specific regiment or individuals have been captured in his series of books, initially self-published.
Having been given a book of his as a thank-you for a talk I gave to the local military history society, we decided to collaborate on helping the books reach a wider audience. The books give valuable insights including relevant statistics and lists of wounded, dead and awards.
Not having had a great interest in the 1899-1902 war for various reasons, seeing Robin’s approach with his books has gently eased me into being more comfortable having to research the war.
