Ian Mackay appreciation

Ian Mackay

Ian joined TSL around 2020 having found us as a result of our African connection including the British South Africa Police link with today’s Zimbabwe.
Henry Hartley, the focus of his book, was instrumental in the white occupation of what became British South Africa Chartered Territory, then Rhodesia and now Zimbabwe. Hartley also has strong links with South Africa where he owned a farm or more.
Ian completed most of his research during the lockdown period of 2020 showing what can be achieved in terms of desk-bound research these days. His perseverence and attention to detail has ensured that his biography on Henry Hartley is a valuable contribution to the history of Southern Africa, being one of the only histories on this remarkable man.
